Mark Hughes Interviews Zack Snyder on Batman vs. Superman, New Supersuits, Official Pictures, and Much More.
Mark Hughes (@markhughesfilms) has been fielding a lot of Batman vs. Superman questions via Twitter the last several months. Mark took the opportunity to pose those questions to Zack Snyder in his most recent interview. Batman vs. Superman fans get ready. These are SOME of the answers that we have been looking for.
Here’s what you need to know.
Models wore the new Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman suits the first time Zack saw them. He geeked out, like we will, we’re sure. It’s definitely a moment in pop culture history and Zack has his picture of that moment in the vault. He thinks it will be worth money someday.
Even just Batman and Superman standing next to each other… [I]t’s kind of epic. You do sort of sense the weight of the pop culture iconography jumping out of its skin when you’re standing there looking at the two of them and Wonder Woman. It’s crazy. But it’s fun. I mean, I have the first photo, I’ve got it in my archive because I was like, “Okay, I better keep this, it’s gonna be worth something,” [laughs]!
Seriously? It’s worth money now. We are sensing a tweet coming. Retweet if you would pay to see the new Super suits?
If you get invited to Cruel and Unusual Films’ offices, you may have the chance to see the picture. Zack has a large one hanging in his office.
I’m actually staring at one right now in my office. And it’s just massive on my wall in my office and it’s epic, let me tell you!
Zack isn’t heartless. If it were up to him he would have posted the pictures to the internet already.
And I’m like, “God, I want to send this to the Internet immediately.” But I know I’m not allowed to [laughs]!
But its not up to him. So layoff Twitter.
Zack doesn’t know when official pictures will be released. He did say that filming is scheduled so there should not be any leaks before the official pictures are put out.
The one nice thing is that, the schedule is designed carefully so that I don’t know that that’ll be [a problem]– but who knows, these cats are pretty good at getting the drop on us with these photos.
Fans are pretty good. They are also very motivated. So we hope Zack is right. Incidently, the Star Wars people probably had the same thought when they decided to film Episode 7 in the middle of the dessert.
Prepare yourselves DC fans. Zack is a Marvel fan and knows that DC films win when Marvel films win at the box office.
I think that’s 100% true. Look, I’m a fan of the Marvel movies… and the thing that’s awesome is, we make a different movie. We have a different product than them, although they both exist in sort of the superhero world, which is great. I think that those are the opportunities. That’s what you get at the movies, you get a chance to go to all these different worlds. And I’m as interested in going to the Marvel Universe as anybody.
Here’s and interesting fact. Zack has wanted to make a Batman movie since he read Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight in college.
For me, that’s really what The Dark Knight Returns did as well. When I read it, I felt like — of course I knew who Batman was and I was familiar with him as a comic book hero — but it was that book that made me say, “Gosh, you know this could be an amazing film.” At the time, I was just starting my college career, but I thought, “Wow this would be a cool movie!”
And no, Batman fans, he didn’t go into Man of Steel hoping to have the chance to re-boot Batman. Instead the idea evolved organically after Man of Steel was completed.
I gotta be honest, it definitely was a thing that… after Man of Steel finished and we started talking about what would be in the next movie, I started subtly mentioning that it would be cool if he faced Batman.
Finally, it’s interesting to note that Batman and Kryptonite were supposed to make his appearance at the end of the 2nd movie.
In the first meeting, it was like, “Maybe Batman?” Maybe at the end of the second movie, some Kryptonite gets delivered to Bruce Wayne’s house or something.
So at one time there was going to be a straight Man of Steel sequel. Now that the Batman time table has been moved up, one can only assume that Kryptonite’s appearance has been moved up, too. We have been hearing for a while that we are likely to see a Kryptonite based villain in Batman vs. Superman. So hello Metallo. Feel free to re-boot your plot theories.
This is only a portion of what is covered in the article. Mark and Zack also discuss Zack’s image as a controversial director, and explore the roots of that perception. If you are a Zack Snyder fan you will definitely want to check out the rest of this article. If you aren’t a fan, you should still read it. The article may offer a new perspective on Zack’s motivations and vision during filmmaking.
We will keep the Batman/Superman updates coming as we get them.
